History of Education
In the Kollam Era 1080 (1905 CE), Maharaja Sree Moolam Thirunal was traveling to inquire about the welfare of his subjects. At that time, the locals gathered at Aanad Junction and requested him to provide educational facilities for their children. Thus, the first primary school in the panchayat was established at Aanad. In its early days, the school functioned on the site where the present market is located. Prior to this, several traditional village schools (kudippallikoodam) served as centers of education across various parts of the panchayat.
Christian missionaries rendered commendable service to the educational growth of the panchayat. Around 75 years ago, an institution started as a village school under the leadership of Father Manuel Ambudayan at the Chullimanoor R.C. Church, which later grew into the S.H.U.P.S. (Sacred Heart Upper Primary School). About 65 years ago, a village school that began in Thankaraja's weaving shed evolved into the Chullimanoor Government L.P.S.
S.N.V.H.S., the only high school in the panchayat, is located at Aanad, in the central region of the panchayat. During the tenure of the first panchayat committee, a U.P. school was sanctioned at Aattinpuram, with local residents donating the required land. At that time, the hiring authority rested with the panchayat management.
By the early decades of the 20th century, primary education facilities began coming up in all major areas of the village. The establishment of Aanad L.P.S. was the first among these. This was followed by the establishment of Luther Mission L.P.S. Venkavila, Ramapuram U.P. School, Chullimanoor L.P.S., and Attukal Grant School. The S.N.V. U.P.S., owned by S.N.D.P. Branch No. 688 of Aanad—which initially started operations based in Puthenpalam—was later shifted to the center of Aanad and upgraded to a High School. The service rendered by V.N. Gangadhara Panicker, with the cooperation of the local people, in establishing this high school is unforgettable.
